The National Union of Disabled Persons of Uganda (NUDIPU) has asked parents and guardians of children with disabilities to make them available for counting during the forthcoming National Population and Housing Census exercise.
The Director of Programs at the Union, John Chris Ninsima, says this will help policy makers determine equitable resource allocation for the persons with disabilities in the country.
He says currently the government is grappling with disaggregated data on persons with disabilities, which has made it difficult to make appropriate budget allocation for this vulnerable group of people.
Ninsiima notes that currently there are nine categories of persons with disabilities in the country, asking the enumerators to recognize all of them during the actual counting
The 2024 National Housing and Population Census is set to run from May 10th-19th, with the first day gazetted as a public holiday.
Unlike previous census exercises, this year the Uganda Bureau of Statistics (UBOS) will use digital technology to collect, process, and disseminate census results.
According to UBOS, the digital census will enable enumerators produce accurate and timely demographic, social, and economic statistics.
