The Deputy Speaker of Parliament Jacob Oulanyah has criticized government for overloading parliament with local government audit reports which he says frustrates House business.
Oluanyah’s criticism during a parliamentary session on Thuursday evening follows an outcry by Aswa County MP, Reagan Okumu who chairs parliament’s committee on Local Government Accounts.
Okumu says he is overwhelmed by Audit reports from two financial years; 2013-2014 and 2014-2015, which he is supposed to present to parliament and have them debated and passed in only six months.
The reports include 1,086 Sub Counties, 176 Town Councils as well as all the 44 Municipalities and 112 districts including all public hospitals and schools.
Oulanyah says this is too much work for parliament to handle and asks government to find another avenue of handling the reports from lower local government units.
Parliament’s Local Government Accounts Committee is reported to be grappling with a cumulative backlog of audit reports.
