Deployment criteria of bodyguards questioned

Ritah Kemigisa | May 5, 2023

Analysts have questioned the criteria used to deploy bodyguards to Very Important Persons (VIPs) in the country. This follows Tuesday’s incident where a bodyguard shot dead his principal in Kyanja, a Kampala suburb.

Private Wilson Sabiti shot dead the State Minister for Labour, Employment and Industrial Relations, Charles Engola and injured his aide Lt Ronald Otim before turning the gun on himself.

Investigations are still ongoing on the motive behind the soldier’s act but many have pointed to the general welfare of security officers and their mental wellbeing.

Speaking to KFM, Godber Tumushabe, the associate director at the Great Lakes Institute for Strategic Studies has recommended that the process of deployment of bodyguards, the training received, and their personal characters be examined critically.
