Chief Justice Alfonse Owiny-Dollo on Tuesday urged judges attending the 26th Annual Judges’ Conference in Kampala to deliver justice with integrity, fairness, and without fear or favor.
He reminded them that, like doctors who heal lives, judges are healers of conflict and should inspire trust and peace through the justice they administer.
Owiny-Dollo’s message comes at a critical time, following the Supreme Court’s landmark decision to ban the trial of civilians in military courts. This ruling has sparked public debate, but the Chief Justice emphasized that judges should fear no one in their adjudications, except God, on whose behalf they render justice.
He also encouraged judges to embrace innovation to deliver speedy and timely justice, which is essential for stimulating economic growth and creating a safe investment environment.
The theme of this year’s Judges’ Conference, “Positioning Uganda’s Judiciary to Contribute to Social and Economic Development,” resonates with Owiny-Dollo’s message.
The Speaker of Parliament, Ms Anita Among, represented President Museveni as the chief guest at the conference.
