Civil society organizations have asked government to put in place an independent body charged with regulating emoluments of Members of Parliament.
Currently, the MPs decide their salaries and allowances and now want to be given 190 million Shillings for purchase of luxurious cars hardly a month after they assumed office.
Thy earn an average of 15 Million Shillings per month which they want raised to 19million Shillings, in addition to other allowances and privileges.
The communications officer, Uganda Debt Network Walter Akwat says, such an expenditure is unjustifiable to the population which is struggling amidst hard economic times.
Akwat proposes that the ministry of finance should be empowered to make the final decision on proposals made by a different body and not Parliament itself.
