Civil society organizations have lost a petition in which they were challenging the legality of the Shillings 20 million given to members of the 8th parliament by government last year.
The money was reportedly given to MPs to monitor government programs but members of the civil society challenged the timing of the move saying it was meant to boost the ruling NRM’s campaign activities during election time.
Some members of parliament including outspoken Kitgum woman MP Beatrice Anywar returned the 20 million earlier saying that their conscience would not let them retain the money on their accounts because they did not receive explanation on its purpose and motive.
In a ruling read by the Registrar of the Constitutional Court Erias Kisawuzi this morning, the judges have dismissed the petition for lack of merit.
They ruled that the petitioners did not present evidence to show that the money was illegally given to the MPs or to prove that it was misused.
The judges say their decisions are only based on facts, saying the case by the civil society organizations was largely speculative.
The case has been dismissed and each party is to meet its own costs.
