The tax on social media platforms and mobile money continues to draw reactions from various stakeholders.

This comes three days since government implemented the new Shs200 tax on social media platforms and a 1% levy on each mobile money transaction.

The chairman of Kampala City Traders’ Association Everest Kayondo says government should reconsider its decision on these particular areas.

He argues that if nothing is done, more revenue is bound to be lost and businesses will be affected.

In a related development, the guild president of Islamic University in Uganda,Kampala Campus Sadat Sengendo has described as unjust the tax on social media.

Speaking at the university’s first internal media challenge, Sengendo said this is also to affect learning since social media has been used as a tool of learning.

He says they stand ready as youth and student leaders to challenge this tax

Two students from Makerere University were yesterday arrested from Parliament as they protested against the newly introduced Social Media Tax.

While meeting telecommunication players yesterday, the Uganda Communications Commission (UCC) executive director Mr Godfrey Mutabazi defended the tax on social media maintaining that it is good and will help government build the local communication industry.
