It is just hours to the Census Night and the Uganda Bureau of Statistics (UBOS) says they have worked out an arrangement with security agencies to return roadblocks on all highways where individuals in transit will be counted and issued with a card to eliminate the possibility of double-counting.
The 2024 National Housing and Population Census is set to kick off after midnight.
UBOS Executive Director Dr. Chris Mukiza says that with the support of security agencies, they intend to establish roadblocks on highways from midnight for mandatorily counting of people in transit.
Dr Mukiza explains that the checkpoints shall be mounted on major roads across the country, targeting the “floating population” such as street children, bus and truck drivers and passengers, and those “who stay in trenches”.
“we shall stage roadblocks to the main roads that are exiting cities and towns so that we can count them so we shall give them cards indicating that they are counted.” Dr Mukiza said. Dr Mukiza urges Ugandans and foreigners in the country, including refugees, to cooperate with, and volunteer factual information to enumerators.
