The cholera outbreak in Mbale seems to be reaching alarming levels with 4 deaths reported and the number of cases registered now at 83.
The Mbale district director of health services Dr. john Baptist Waniaye says the outbreak that was initially in the Mbale municipality alone has now spread to other sub counties and neighboring districts.
Waniaye identifies the affected areas as Bunghoko, Bukasakya , Bunghoko Mutoto, Namanyonyi and Nakaloke subcounties.
Other cholera cases that have been registered include 2 from Sironko, 2 in Budaka and 1 in Butalejja district.
Waniaye says registering even one case in an area means a lot given the high transmission rate of the disease. He also says they may be forced to open another treatment camp as the one at Busui health center 4 is getting overwhelmed.
Waniaye says the ministry of health availed some supplies at the onset of the outbreak but more is needed to handle the ever increasing number of cases.

District officials have blamed the outbreak on consumption of dirty water, at the height of the drought season.
