Cooperators have been asked to start challenging their leaders if they are to remain relevant and effective.
This call comes as government considers revival of the cooperative movement as the only gate way to development.
Speaking during the Ignatious Musazi Memorial lecture at Makerere yesterday, Irene Ovungi a former East African Legislative Assembly legislator said many leaders are co-opted by government and thus if cooperators do not challenge their actions this movement will not take off.
She added that cooperative leaders must be independent minded, but many are working under and for the state.
The 96th International Cooperative Day is to be commemorated on July 7th at the Civil Service College in Jinja under the theme; “Sustainable Consumption and Production of Goods and Services”
