Bobi Wine to file presidential petition today

By Ritah Kemigisa

The National Unity Platform (NUP) party leader Robert Kyagulanyi, is today expected to file a petition challenging the re-election of President Museveni.

Kyagulanyi’s lawyers of Wameli and Company Advocates had written to the court to allow them to file their petition on Saturday but the Chief Justice advised that they file it today, Monday.

The lead lawyer Anthony Wameli has told KFM that they expect to file the petition by 12pm and is confident they have the necessary evidence.

“We are convinced as the legal team and as a party that we have enough evidence, actually we have overwhelming evidence to succeed in this particular cause if all factors remain constant especially, independence of the judiciary,” said Mr Wameli.

Article 104 of the Constitution as amended in 2017 allows a presidential candidate up to 15 days after the declaration of results to file a petition in the Supreme Court.

The 15 days elapsed on Sunday but the NUP team were allowed to file it today.

Kyagulanyi has since contested the results announced by the electoral commission that show President Museveni was reelected with a 58.38% compared with his 35.08 percentage of the total votes cast.

Some Political Analysts including Morrison Rwakakamba believe Kyagulanyi’s team are just playing politics casting doubt their petition will win.

He was appearing on morning at NTV programme this morning.

“I think they are trying to sustain the hope that maybe this is going to be overturned, they are singing election fraud election fraud, we have seen how Donald Trump used this and eventually we had the march to the capitol, so they want to keep their supporters inspired so they are using the courts to keep political momentum,” said Mr Rwakakamba.
