National Unity Platform President Robert Kyagulanyi, alias Bobi Wine, announced on Monday evening that his elder brother, Fred Nyanzi Ssentamu, who also serves as the opposition party’s mobilisation chief, was abducted by heavily armed men and taken away in a “drone” to an unknown destination.
Mr. Nyanzi was reportedly intercepted by the gunmen at Kubbiri roundabout in Kampala.
“Our comrade and Head of Mobilisation for NUP comrade Nyanzi Fred Ssentamu has been abducted by heavily armed men and taken away in a drone to an unknown destination! He has been abducted on gunpoint from Kubbiri Roundabout,” a statement shared on X by Bobi Wine reads in part.
Similarly, the Leader of Opposition in Parliament, Joel Ssenyonyi, stated that the party’s deputy spokesperson, Alex Waisswa Mufumbiro, was also abducted by “armed regime operatives” as they left the party headquarters in Makerere-Kavule, Kampala. He says this occurred shortly after Bobi Wine addressed journalists about the “illegal detention” of veteran politician Dr. Kizza Besigye.
Dr. Besigye remains on remand at Luzira Prison on national security charges, alongside his colleague, Obeid Lutale.
The government of Uganda is yet to issue a statement on the matter.
