The proposal by some NRM MPs to extend the current term of elected leaders continues to draw fierce criticism from a cross section of Ugandans.
The latest is from Retired Bishop Zac Niringiye who says Uganda has many capable leaders who will take this country forward.
The move fronted by Nakifuma MP, Eng. Kafeero Ssekitoleko, is aimed at giving time to the Electoral Commission to organize elections, given that billions of funds are currently being spent on the National ID project and the national census.
Kafeero says the plan is also in line with the opposition’s demands to give a level playing field during the elections.
However, Niringiye says that such a move is unconstitutional and would deny Ugandans right to choose leaders they deserve.
He has also called on all Ugandans to pray and work for a peaceful transition
Earlier, opposition legislators rejected a proposal by some NRM MPs to extend the current term of elected leaders.
Kafeero defends his stand, saying it will be beneficial to all stakeholders to hold well prepared elections.
However, MPs Reagan Okumu, Medard Ssegona and Patrick Amuriat say it is suspicious and an insult to the electorate as well.
For the Democratic Party Secretary General Mathias Nsubuga, the move is unconstitutional and against the will of the people since the constitution proves for a five year term of office.
