The police have intercepted several members of the opposition as they attempted to leave the Interparty Cooperation offices along Katonga Road in Kampala.
The group which included FDC leader KiizaBesigye, his party spokesperson WafulaOgutu, City Lord Mayor Elias Lukwago, MPs Nabilah Sempala and Semuju Nganda, FDC’s Anne Mugisha and Ingrid Turinawe had been holding a meeting before they were arrested.
According to our reporter, the group was first stopped by the Traffic police Chief Lawrance Niwabiine and had their driving licenses checked before they were cleared to proceed but they decided to park their vehicles by the road side and walk to Sheraton hotel where they intended to have their lunch.
However, police swung into action immediately firing teargas as they were whisked away in a police van to the different police stations.
Those currently being held at the Jinja Road police station include the FDC spokesperson Wafula Ogutu, and Kyadondo East MP Semuju Nganda.
While Besigye has been taken to Kiira road police station for questioning. The police station is completely sealed off with by security personnel with journalists and members of the public denied access.
The arrests come after the members of the Activists for Change pressure group vowed to defy the police directives and resume their walk- to- work protests today.
It is however not clear what charges are to be preferred against the group.
Meanwhile Ingrid Turinawe and the group’s coordinator Matthias Mpuuga are heading to Katwe play ground where Kampala Woman MP Nabilah Sempala intends to hold a rally this afternoon.
The police has however, insisted that no such rally will be allowed as it may disrupt business in the city.
