The case against the FDC leader Col. Kizza Besigye has failed to kick off before the Kasangati Magistrate’s court, after prosecution witnesses failed to turn up.
Besigye appeared before the Court this morning on charges arising from his standoff with the police on April 28, during the Walk to Work protests.
On the fateful day, he parked his car at the Mulago round about after he disagreed with the police on which route to drive through and was later brutally arrested.
The charges he faces include a traffic offence and holding an illegal assembly.
The prosecutor Gladys Nyanzi told court that she has failed to trace the two principal witnesses in the case who include the Kansangati police commander David Collins Mukitale and one Owiny, the officer in charge of traffic who reportedly had a road accident.
She asked Court for more time to enable her trace the necessary witnesses. David Mpanga, Besigye’s lawyer however objected to the Prosecution’s request, insisting that the witnesses in question are officers of the police who should be easy to trace.
The magistrate James Eryemu has adjourned the case until 13th July to allow the prosecution time to trace the said witnesses.
Speaking shortly after the court session, Col. Besigye accused the prosecution of dragging the case unnecessarily, interfering with his private business.
