The UPDF Chief of Defence Forces Gen David Muhoozi has committed to protecting human rights at a meeting with Maria Burnett, the Director of the Human Rights Watch.
In a press statement sent to media houses, the army says the two discussed cooperation in the arena of human rights.
Gen Muhoozi also reassured Ms Burnett that the army will endeavour to preserve human rights wherever troops deployed both at home and abroad.
They further exchanged information on past reports by Human Rights Watch on UPDF operations in Somalia and Central African Republic.
The 2014 Human Rights Watch Report accused AMISOM forces including the UPDF of sexually abusing Somali women.
In May 2017, the rights body issued another report accusing the Ugandan army of rape and exploitation of women in the Central African Republic.
In today’s meeting, the two parties agreed on a continued engagement between the institutions.
The meeting was also attended by former Deputy Special Representative of the Chairperson of the African Union Ms Lydia Wanyoto Mutende.
