The charges of abuse of office against the former Vice President Professor Gilbert Bukenya have formally been dropped by the Anti Corruption Court.
This is after the Inspector General of Government (IGG) withdrew the charges last week citing loss of interest in the case.
The former vice president faces charges relating to the misappropriation of government funds during the 2007 Common Wealth Heads of Government Meeting, causing financial loss of up to 6bn shillings to the government of Uganda.
The charges saw Prof. Bukenya remanded to Luzira prison earlier, but last week the IGG withdrew charges of abuse of office against Bukenya saying he had lost interest in the case.
Anti Corruption Court Judge Catherine Bamugemeire has now ordered that the Shillings 60 million that had been paid for bail be refunded to Bukenya by government.
However, the case in which the former Vice President is jointly charged with Motor Care Uganda Ltd for alleged fraudulent practice still remains and hearing is set for November 11th before Judge Paul Mugamba.
Speaking from the Anti Corruption Court a short while ago, Prof Bukenya has thanked President Museveni for what he described as continued support through this trying time of his political career.
He is expected to address his supporters at his home in Kakiri Wakiso district at one o’clock.
