Health rights activists are planning to petition Parliament, seeking for intervention to the current woes at Mulago national referral hospital.
Last week, the National Water and Sewerage Corporation cut off water supply to the hospital, over failure to pay a Shs. 6.5 billion bill.
Addressing the media today, Voices for Health Rights, a coalition of organisations, says the current state at Mulago is worrying, with most wards at risk of disease outbreaks due to lack of water.
Robinah Kaitiritimba and Allen Tegulle say government should take full responsibility of utilities for health facilities to avoid situations which could place the lives of patients at risk.
Mulago’s spokesperson, Enock Kusasira says
the hospital is still in negotiation with the Ministry of Finance to find funds to offset the bill.
Meanwhile, some legislators on the Parliamentary Health committee have criticized National Water and Sewerage Corporation over their actions against Mulago.
Mbarara Municipality MP, Dr. Medard Bitekyerezo says the corporation acted unfairly yet they are aware of the magnitude of their actions.
Bitekyerezo says though Mulago should have paid their debt, there should also be mechanisms through which such matters can be resolved without taking grave decisions.
