Rights Activists under ActionAid International Uganda have today launched the“16 Days of Black” campaign as they join the world in the 16 Days Activism Against Gender-Based Violence (GBV).
Speaking at the launch of the campaign at their offices in Kasanga, the ActionAid International country director Xavier Ejoyi said the campaign is aimed at showing solidarity with survivors and raising voices to fight against harmful myths that normalize gender-based violence.
“We want to call on everyone, in your individual capacities, in the collective capacities that we have to stand up and call for an end to violence against women. Today we extend that opportunity here to each one of us to join the voices from across Uganda and globally to call to end to gender-based violence. We also call on all stakeholders to step up efforts to prevent violence against women in all forms,” he noted.
The global theme for the activism is “UNITE! Invest to prevent violence against women and girls”
According to ActionAid International, a national survey on Violence against Women and Girls (VAWG) by the Uganda Bureau of Statistics (UBOS) revealed that almost 95% of women and girls had experienced physical or sexual violence, or both, by partners or non-partners since the age of 15.
