A4C resumes walk-to-work protests

Reporter | January 19, 2012

Members of the opposition Activists for Change pressure group have vowed to resume their walk–to- work protests today despite police warnings against the same.

The fresh protests dubbed ‘walk- to- work reloaded’ will see opposition members this time holding rallies countrywide instead of simply walking to work as was the case before.

The A4C coordinator, Matthias Mpuuga says the campaign will begin with rallies, sensitizing the masses on the economic situation and what their social and economic rights are.

He adds that the police cannot stop them and advises that it instead offers them protection.

However, police spokesman Asuman Mugenyi says there are international visitors expected and such rallies cannot be allowed now.

Meanwhile, the police is heavily deployed at the home of the FDC women’s league leader Ingrid Turinawe at Gayaza in a move that is meant to prevent her from taking part in today’s protests.

Turinawe was early this week placed under preventive arrested following reports that she was planning to lead fresh protests.

The protests that rocked the country last year are over the tough economic situation the country is facing including the high inflation rates and the increased in power tariffs and high commodity prices among other things.

Meanwhile the Police have explained the heavy deployment all over the country, saying is meant  to avert any occurrence of violence.

The Kampala metropolitan police spokesperson Ibin Senkumbi says the police deployment is meant to maintain law and order and to protect people’s property.

In Kampala, heavy police presence is seen around Nakawa, along Jinja Road and the city center.

Some police officers are seen armed with long sticks and batons.
