Burundi today hosts the 26th Annual Nile Council of Ministers’ meeting in its capital Bujumbura.
Ministers in charge of Water Affairs from the 10 Nile Basin Initiative (NBI) Member States meet to discuss and provide strategic guidance and direction on cooperative management and development of the shared Nile Basin water resources so as to contribute to improved quality of life of Nile Basin citizens.
They will also consider the NBI annual workplan and budget, review performance the previous year’s performance and make decisions relating to the financing strategies and resource mobilisation action plan.
Burundi’s Minister of Environment, Agriculture and Livestock, Deo Guide Rurema says in addition, Burundi will assume political leadership of the NBI from Ethiopia.
Accordingly, Burundi’s Minister of Environment, Rurema will succeed Ethiopia’s Minister of Water, Irrigation and Electricity, Dr Seleshi Bekele.
