At least 26 Ugandans have been rescued from rebels in Myanmar in Southeast Asia.
The deputy national coordinator for Prevention of human trafficking Derrick Basalirwa has told journalists in Kampala that they await repatriation.
He says since January 2023 when their predicament was first reported, 21 Ugandans have in a phased manner been repatriated.
He says this has been made possible with the help of stakeholders including civil society and some governments under the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) currently chaired by Uganda.
Meanwhile a suspected human trafficker he identifies as a one Edith Mukisa has been arrested,” we hope that when our people finally return we shall start off with her case.” Basalirwa
Mukisa was apprehended when she returned to Uganda on April 27th.
In February 2024, the Minister of State in charge of regional affairs, John Mulimba said that over 290 Ugandans were stranded in India, Egypt, and Myanmar.
