The 2015 Primary Leaving Examination results have been released indicating that 86.2% of candidates have passed.
Education minister Jessica Alupo notes that unlike previous years, urban centers have not dominated the list of best performers.
Alupo on results517,000 pupils passed in 2015 compared to 516,000 in 2014.
The breakdown of the results is as follows; Div 1(51,400) Div 2 (234,000), Div 3 (146,000), Div 4 (85,000) while 82,973 were ungraded/failed. A total of 19,614 did not write their papers.
Uganda National Examinations Board (UNEB) executive Secretary Mathew Bukenya says generally boys performed better than girls while girls performed English better. He adds that the results show a significant reduction in cases of malpractice.
In total results of over 900 candidates have been withheld compared to 1,344 withheld in 2014.
He attributes the decline to the high number of scouts deployed to observe the process last year.
Overall 9,110 scouts were deployed to monitor last year’s exams.
Bukenya says Candidates whose results have been withheld will be accorded fair shearing; those cleared will have their results released. Mityana district is most affected with 140 pupils from three centers followed by Kyenjojo district where 121 results are withheld.
Other districts include; Buyende (119), Kamuli (109) and Sembabule(105) among others. Some of the affected schools include Bulimba Primary School, Nkome Primary School, Mirembe Public primary school and St Mary’s Kaihura in Kyenjonjo.
The State Minister for Primary Education, John Chrysostom Muyingo says the Uganda Examination’s Board has been tasked to immediately investigate these cases and bring all culprits to book.
