Over 200 pilgrims from Kabale Diocese have this morning embarked on their journey to Namugongo Shrine ahead of the June 3, Uganda Martyrs Celebration.
The pilgrims from Kisoro, Rubanda, Kabale districts assembled at Kabale diocesan headquarters last on Saturday and later had a holy mass at St Mary’s Rushoroza Cathedral in Kabale Municipality.
Alphonse Biraho, a catechist at Christ the King Catholic church parish the pilgrims were flagged off at 5:00 AM.
Abel Ruganza, the Kabale District Police Commander has appealed to the pilgrims to ensure discipline while on the road and cooperate with the police for their own safety.
While Yahya Baguma, the Officer in Charge of Traffic at Kabale police station has asked the pilgrims to be mindful of other road users while they trek.
This year’s Martyrs’ Day celebrations are to be led by the Catholic Church’s diocese of Jinja under the theme: “Lord increase our Faith”, which is extracted from Luke 17: 5.
The annual celebration was set aside in honor of the martyrdom on the orders of Kabaka Mwanga II, the then King of Buganda.
The Uganda Martyrs were killed between 1885 and 1887 for converting to Christianity.
