At least 14 out of 135 districts across the country have not been able to send any students to Makerere University, the country’s oldest and number one institution in the forthcoming academic year 2021/22.
The figures for the direct entry private intake at the university that was released on Monday indicate that students from 122 districts shared the 14,618 self-sponsored students’ slots.
This means that 14 Districts, all among the newly created ones have not been able to send hardly one student for the next intake at the top University.
Districts in Northern Uganda top the list of those that have not sent any students to the University with five Districts missing out.
This is followed by Eastern and Western each with four districts not being able to send any students to Makerere while central has only one district that has not been able to send many students.
The affected districts include Nabilatuk, Bugweri, Kasanda, Kwania, Kapelebyong, Kikuube, Obongi, Kazo, Rwampara, Kitagwenda, Madi-Okollo, Karenga, Kalaki and Terego.
When contacted yesterday, The Head of Admission at Makerere University, Mr Charles Ssentongo said that sometimes students from some districts do not apply because they did not pass their exams or their parents cannot afford the tuition.
Kampala and Wakiso District topped the admission list with 2,543, or 16.4 percent, of the 14,618 self-sponsored students admitted.
