Vice President in Court over election petition

The Vice President Prof. Gilbert Bukenya Balibaseka has today appeared before court in a petition challenging his election as Busiro North MP.

He was sued by one Hussein Kasta Bukenya who claims the elections were marred by various irregularities.

Kasta Bukenya is seeking court orders nullifying the Vice President’s election and wants fresh polls held.

He accuses the Vice President of voter bribery, intimidation and alleges that he took up his party symbols on Election Day.

He also accuses the Electoral Commission of omitting one of his names on the ballot paper, creating confusion among the voters.

Bukenya and his accuser appeared before high court Judge Musoke Kibuuka who adjourned the case until 6th of June. This was done to allow the Vice President’s legal team, which is led by City lawyer Kiyemba Mutale more time to prepare their case.

Prof. Bukenya won the race with 17,382 votes, while Kasta came second with 4, 953 in a race that attracted five other candidates.
