Taxi drivers call off strike

Taxi drivers operating in Kampala city have called off their planned strike.

The strike had been planned for today but was called off yesterday following a meeting between the drivers’ leaders and the Inspector General of police Gen. Kale Kayihura.

The strike was in protest against the arrest of over 70 of their colleagues by the KCCA enforcement officers.

However, while addressing the drivers at a meeting held at the police headquarters yesterday, the Gen. Kayihura said there was no need to detain the drivers who are accused of among other things inciting violence.

He ordered that the enforcement officers together with the police officers who effected the arrest be investigated and if need be prosecuted.

Kayihura also ordered the immediate release of the drivers on bail as investigations continue.
