Researchers demand for 1% of GDP

Researchers are asking government to remit the 1% of the GDP for funding research in the country.

The call was made by the director Research and Graduate Training at Makerere University Prof. Buyinza Mukadasi at an ongoing researchers’ conference.

He says parliament passed a resolution earlier to have the 1% injected into research work but this is not happening.

He adds that the Sh10bn received from well-wishers and donors annually is still not enough.

Speaking at the same conference in Entebbe this morning, education and sports minister Jesica Alupo asked the private sector to support local research institutions to develop new innovations.

The 9th regional collaboration conference organized by Makerere University’s College of Design, Arts and Technology has drawn participants from 10 countries including Mozambique, Zimbabwe, Tanzania and Kenya among others.
