Prison service quizzed over 46 billion arrears

The Uganda prisons service has been quizzed over 46 billion arrears arising from unpaid bills.

According to the Auditor General Report of 2014, the Prisons Service has been piling up bills for water, food, electricity and procurement of prisons uniforms among others.

While appearing before parliament’s Public Accounts Committee, the Undersecretary Simon Kimono said the prison service has for long been underfunded especially for food where they have had a consistent shortfall every financial year.

However, members including Babirye Kyabangi, Paul Mwiru and the committee chairperson Alice Alaso dismissed the explanation saying the Prisons Services is not making use of its farms and huge production capacity.
