Makerere university staff has been assured that the university is committed to implementing the proposed staff allowance increment.

This follows reports that the university bursar and secretary were opposed to the implementation of the 70% increment announcement earlier.

According to the spokesperson of the Makerere University Academic Staff Association Louis Kakinda they have got assurance from the Deputy Vice chancellor Finance Prof, Barnabus Nawangwe this morning that the new salary structure will be implemented.

Kakinda says the staff should remain calm but focused as they wait for end of September when the new pay structure will be effected.

The lecturers had laid down their tools demanding for a 100% pay rise, only called it off after the university council promised a 70% increment in the staff allowances.

Meanwhile the institution remains closed and is expected to be re-opened on September 7th.
