The speaker of parliament Rebecca Kadaga has given assurance that passing of the Local Content Bill into law is to be fast tracked.

The Speaker made the remarks at the 10th Eastern Region Trade Fair organised by the Uganda Manufacturers Association at the Mbale Municipal Stadium where she said this is aimed at ensuring that local industries are protected.

Kadaga said that some provisions of this law were inserted in the petroleum laws but the persons concerned ignored it however adding that with the new law, there will be restrictions on what can be imported.

Kadaga said local content should be a priority in Uganda as it is in other countries.

Kasanda North Mp Patrick Nsamba in February was granted leave of Parliament to introduce a Private Member’s Bill titled “The Local Content Bill, 2017”.

It seeks among other things to provide for the establishment of a national Local Content Committee, the maximization of value-addition and job creation through the use of local expertise.
