Cultural Norms to Blame for Female Poor Performance in Sciences

Iganga district woman Member of Parliament, Olivia Kwagala has attributed the poor performance of girls in science subjects to cultural norms.

The MP was reacting to the recent report released by Uganda National Examination Board that ranks girls as the worst performers in science subjects compared to boys in the last three consecutive years.

She said that many parents don’t adequately facilitate girls with education materials like text books which affect their performance.

She called upon parents to equally give girls enough time to attend lessons to enable them perform well.

According to the report by UNEB, 75.6% of female candidates in 2012 got F9 in science subjects.
