Drama ensued at Lira Central police station last evening when former FDC Dr. Kiiza Besigye escaped from police custody.
After dispersing his supporters who gathered at Lira Mayor’s Gardens and battling rowdy supporters on the streets the previous day, police towed Besigye’s car to police in what they called preventive arrests.
While inside the police station, Besigye took advantage of the disorganized police officers and sneaked out through the station’s barbed wire fencing.
A police Officer who was on duty at the time confirmed that Besigye escaped through the fencing and got into a standby car that parked outside the station, abandoning his car and other FDC party officials at the police at the time of his escape.
This prompted police to begin searching for Besigye even inside empty cells.
However, when contacted, David Ongom the North Kyoga police spokesperson denied claims that Besigye escaped from police custody saying he was simply released after calm was restored.
