Decline in HIV positive births

The ministry of health says it has registered tremendous decline in the number of babies born with HIV.

Available statistics form the ministry indicate that babies born with the virus have reduced from 15,000 in 2012 to 8,000 currently.

The health minister Dr. Rukahana Rugunda attributes the decline to the aggressive campaign to prevent mother to child transmission of the virus.

Rugunda has been on a fact finding mission of initiatives undertaken by the Baylor College of Medicine to eliminate pediatric HIV.

Meanwhile, The executive director of the College Dr. Adeodata  Kekitiinwa says they are now recording only 2percent babies of born with HIV compared to 40 percent  IN 1998 when they had just opened.

The center currently has over 6500 patients 70 percent of which are children below 15 years.
