Cranes begin training

The Uganda Cranes have today started training at Mandela National Stadium ahead of next month’s World Cup and AFCON qualifiers. The national team coach Bobby Williamson summoned 30 players for the games with Angola, Senegal and Congo Brazaville. 16 of those summoned including Mike Serumaga, Geoffrey Masa, Simeon Masaba and Hamza Muwonge the only goal keeper have already arrived. Still expected are Dennis Onyango, Andy Mwesigwa and Brian Omwong .   The Cranes play Angola on June 3rd, and Senegal on June 9th in the World Cup qualifiers, while the game against Congo Brazaville in the AFCON qualifiers is slated for June 16th.

Bobby summons team

Cranes’ coach Bobby Williamson has summoned 30 players ahead of next month’s World Cup and AFCON qualifiers. Among those summoned is Fortunate Omong of South African-based Black Leopards who makes a comeback after 3 years. The other professionals expected in the squad are Andy Mwesigwa, Mike Serumaga, and Tonny Mawejje. The others are Caesar Okuti together with Joseph Owino. The team starts training on Monday 21 and Bobby says he expects 70% of the squad at Nambole stadium by that date. The Cranes play Angola, Senegal and Congo Brazaville between June 3rd and 15th.

Football awards launched

The Bell Super League footballer of the year awards have been launched today, with the ceremony set for 29th June. The awards meant to reward quality football in the country have 15 categories lined up, in which players are competing. The biggest award of the footballer of the year has 4nominees who include Kizito Lwanga who plays for Bunamwaya FC, Kizito Luwaga of Express FC, George Abego of Maroons and URA’s Robert Sentongo. The other awards include Goal keeper of the year, midfielder of the year, defender of the year and top scorer of the year, among others. Uganda drops in FIFA rankings

Uganda has been relegated to 88th position in the just released Coca Cola Fifa rankings. Uganda was beaten by Congo Brazzaville in an Afcon qualifier last month in Brazzaville are ties on 388 points with Qatar and Saudi Arabia who climbed 8 and one place respectively. Despite the decline, Uganda is still the highest ranked Cecafa country with Rwanda behind in 105 positions, with neighbors Sudan ranked 110th and Kenya 113th. African Champions Zambia climbed two places from 43rd to 41st with beaten finalist Ivory Coast still the only African country in the top 20 ranked nations coming in on 15th position. Kiprotich wins USPA award

Athlete Steven Kiprotich has won the Uganda Sports Press Association for the month of February beating competition from weight lifter Ismail Katamba. At the USPA monthly meeting at Oasis restaurant in Lugogo, Kiprotich collected 405 points compared to Katamba’s 400. Kiprotich won a Bronze medal at the Tokyo marathon last month while Katamba achieved the same feat at the Islamic weight lifting games in Saudi Arabia. Others who received recognition were athletes Annet Negesa and Moses Kipsiro, Chess player Harold Wanyama for winning the Mulago open. Badminton players, Shamim Bangi and Margaret Nakabirwa together with rally driver Jas Mangat who won the Mbarara Rally received credit.
