Record champions, Uganda today start defence of their Cecafa tittle with a Machakos fixture against perennial opponents, Rwanda in a group game. This is after Burundi beat Somalia 2 – nil. A strike in each half by Christopher Nduwarugira and Abdul Razak Fiston saw the Burundian Swallows register an impressive 2- nil victory over the Somalian Ocean Stars in a thrilling game played in a rain marred Machakos Stadium group B fixture. Ranked 204th on a meager 6 points in the FIFA world’s latest ratings released yesterday, Somalia put up a spirited display against Burundi, which is ranked 112th on 293 points. Cranes coach Micho Sredojevic is optimistic that the positive energy running through the team will help them ahead of this Saturday’s must-win World Cup qualifier against Senegal. The Serb led his team to Marrakech, Morocco yesterday after a four-day training camp in Istanbul, Turkey confident that they have, thus far, tied the right knots in their preparations. According to Micho, it is so far so good as the team continues to generate positive energy, keeping the minds of players focused on the game. Last Saturday Uganda beat Botswana 3-1 in a Gaborone friendly, which was important for confidence building. Uganda now need nothing less than victory to progress to the play-offs of qualification while Senegal will do with a draw.

Cranes, Senegal kick-off time changed

World soccer body FIFA has communicated a change of time for this Saturday’s World Cup qualifier between Senegal and Uganda. This has been revealed by Fufa CEO Edgar Watson. He says the match to be played at a neutral venue in Morocco will now kick off an hour later than earlier scheduled. Kick-off time had been scheduled fort 9pm Ugandan time but the game will now start at 11pm still Ugandan time. According to Watson there was no reason given for the change, adding that Fifa has the mandates to make such changes if deemed necessary. Uganda on eight points trail the Lions of Teranga by a point. They must now beat Senegal to progress from Group J to the final round of qualification …

President Museveni flags off Uganda Cranes

A good diet and personal discipline is crucial in sports. This is the advice given by President Yoweri Museveni to the Uganda Cranes. He was this afternoon flagging off the national football team at Statehouse Entebbe. The team leaves on Thursday for a build-up match against Botswana ahead of the World Cup qualifier against Senegal slated for September 7th in Morocco. The president has also given the team Sh 384m to cater for the players’ tickets. He has given another Sh 559m for chattering a plane for fans to support the team in Morocco.

Athletes off to Mauritius

The Ugandan team of four runners has flown to Mauritius to compete in the 11th Africa Junior Championships due August 29 – September 1, 2013. The team led by Coach Francis Demayi also comprises Halima Nakaayi who will compete in 400m and 800m races. The others are 200m and 400m runner Denis Opio who is making his first international appearance, Moses Kurong and Mande Abdalla who will feature in 5000m and 10,000m. Meanwhile Ugandan athlete Solomon Mutai has won the Safaricom Mombasa International Marathon in a time of 2 hours and 14 minutes. The victory comes just days after one of Uganda’s greatest runners; Stephen Kiprotich won a gold medal at the recent World Championships in Moscow.
