Uganda drops in FIFA rankings

Uganda has been relegated to 88th position in the just released Coca Cola Fifa rankings. Uganda was beaten by Congo Brazzaville in an Afcon qualifier last month in Brazzaville are ties on 388 points with Qatar and Saudi Arabia who climbed 8 and one place respectively. Despite the decline, Uganda is still the highest ranked Cecafa country with Rwanda behind in 105 positions, with neighbors Sudan ranked 110th and Kenya 113th. African Champions Zambia climbed two places from 43rd to 41st with beaten finalist Ivory Coast still the only African country in the top 20 ranked nations coming in on 15th position. Kiprotich wins USPA award

Athlete Steven Kiprotich has won the Uganda Sports Press Association for the month of February beating competition from weight lifter Ismail Katamba. At the USPA monthly meeting at Oasis restaurant in Lugogo, Kiprotich collected 405 points compared to Katamba’s 400. Kiprotich won a Bronze medal at the Tokyo marathon last month while Katamba achieved the same feat at the Islamic weight lifting games in Saudi Arabia. Others who received recognition were athletes Annet Negesa and Moses Kipsiro, Chess player Harold Wanyama for winning the Mulago open. Badminton players, Shamim Bangi and Margaret Nakabirwa together with rally driver Jas Mangat who won the Mbarara Rally received credit.

Cranes lose to Congo

A first minute strike by Congo Brazzaville striker Prince Onyange sent an early scare in the cranes camps in the Afcon 2013 first leg qualifier in Congo. Uganda was beaten hands down by an experienced Congo side as they lost the game 3-1. A first half dominated by Congo saw Uganda pull one back through St George striker Mike Sserumaga to level the score at 1-1. Uganda got an early scare when Dennis Onyango got injured and was replaced by Dhaira Adbel who conceded two second half goals. 50 riders to test new track

The newly revamped Uganda Motocross Arena track will host its first action when the First round of the National Motocross Championship on 4th March with over 50 riders taking part. The track in Busika off Gayaza road has been upgraded to international standards under the close supervision of renowned expert Ray Wilson mainly in preparation for the All Africa Motocross of Nations championship due in August. However this event presents an opportunity for riders to have a feel of the new track while at the same time Asaf Natan,Maxim Van Pee and Barack Orland will be unveiling new bikes as the 2012 season gets underway. Obua too resigns

David Obua has written to Fufa formally announcing his retirement from the national team a day after hitherto Uganda Cranes skipper Ibrahim Sekagya led the way on Monday. According to the National team, The Hearts forward penned the letter last night saying he had decided to end his over 10 years in the national team to allow upcoming youngsters a chance to grow and for him to concentrate on his club football career. In the letter, Obua further added that failing to qualify for Gabon and Equatorial Guinea and events surrounding his expulsion from camp before the game were unfortunate but he would continue to support Uganda as a proud Ugandan.
