Cameroon Anglophone lawyers ‘to end strike’

Lawyers in English-speaking parts of Cameroon will end their strike to demand an end to discrimination early next month, the head of their legal body has said. However, the strike’s end is conditional on the release of two lawyers who were detained following the outbreak of protests, Jackson Ngnie Kamga said in a statement. English-speaking lawyers have been boycotting legal proceedings since October to protest against the use of French in courts and schools in Anglophone regions. They are also opposed to the employment of court workers who do not understand the application of British common law. Former Nigeria oil minister and other officials charged with money-laundering.

A former Nigerian oil minister and three election officials have been charged with money-laundering. The ex-minister, Diezani Alison-Madueke, has been accused of bribing the officials before the 2015 elections. She was not present to enter a plea, and was described on the charge sheet as being at large. In the past she has rejected accusations that she was corrupt. Ms Alison-Madueke served under President Goodluck Jonathan. He lost the election to Muhamadu Buhari. The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission says one of the three officials pleaded guilty, and the other two not guilty. Story By BBC News
