Parliament approves Sekandi and Mbabazi

Parliament has approved the appointment of Edward Sekandi and Amama Mbabazi as the new Vice President and Prime minister respectively. The former speaker of parliament together with former security minister Amama Mbababzi were named by the president at an NRM caucus meeting yesterday for the positions of Vice president and Prime Minister respectively. Sekandi replaces Prof Gilbert Bukenya, while Mbabazi replaces Prof. Apolo Nsibambi who is retiring from cabinet. The motion for Sekandi’s approval has been tabled by Soroti Municipality MP Mike Mukula and seconded by Alebtong MP Rebecca Atengu, Bushenyi Woman MP Mary Karoro Okurut, and Dokolo county MP Okot Ogong. Believers begin martyrs’ day pilgrimage

97 Christian pilgrims from Kabale and Mbarara dioceses have crossed Mbarara town trekking to Namugongo, ahead of the Martyrs Day celebrations scheduled for June 3rd. The 65-man delegation from Kabale diocese led by Julius Birungi Byakristu hopes to spend a maximum of 10 days on the journey. Birungi says the journey has been smooth so far except for insults from bystanders, who have accused them of being idle, with some even sending their dogs to attack them. The delegation from Mbarara diocese was drawn from Sheema district and comprises of 32 believers from the parishes of Mushanga, Nyabwina, Rwentunda and Kashekuro.

Police indentifies hooters

The police have identified 139 vehicles and motor cycles in connection with the opposition’s hoot campaign. The police spokesperson for Kampala Metropolitan region Ibin Senkumbi says they are hunting for the owners of the said vehicles for alleged involvement in the hoot campaign. The campaign launched by the opposition Activists for Change pressure group on Monday this week involves hooting and banging of tables and empty tins at the strike of the hour of 5pm every day. This is part of their civil defiance campaign to show dissatisfaction with government over the high cost of living. Sekandi is new Vice President

News coming in from the NRM Caucus in Entebbe indicates that former speaker Edward Sekandi has been approved for the position of the country’s Vice President. Sekandi’s nomination has already been approved by the members. Security minister Amama Mbabazi has been proposed for the position of Prime Minister. Sources at the meeting say the names were proposed by President Museveni after which, members nominated and seconded them. Sekandi replaces Gilbert Bukenya who was asked to resign this week. Amama Mbabazi may on the other hand be asked to quit his position as NRM Secretary General.  The President is expected to name the rest of his cabinet soon.  Story by Olive Eyotaru/Ben Jumbe

Police commander suspended

The Officer in Charge of the Kasangati police station has been suspended. Collins Mukite has been suspended over alleged neglect of duty for reportedly failing to deploy officers in the area last week. Collins who was in charge of deployment and commended the operations in Kansangati last week is said to have absconded from duty leaving no one in command. The Deputy Police spokesperson Vincent Sekate has confirmed the suspension. Mukite has overseen the deployment in Kasangati and also commanded the operations involving the FDC Leader Col.
