Parliament votes new Speaker

Members of the 9th parliament have started casting their vote to elect a new Speaker. The voting is being conducted by secret ballot and the process is presided over the Chief justice Benjamin Odoki. The NRM Candidate Rebecca Kadaga was nominated by the party Secretary General Amama Mbabazi, seconded the Nakaseke Woman MP Rose Namayanja and the Isingiro North MP Bright Rwamirama. The opposition candidate Nandala Mafabi was nominated by Makindye West MP Hussein Kyanjo, seconded by the Kitgum district woman MP Beatrice Anywar and John Ken Lukyamuzi. The process however turned dramatic after opposition members nominated outgoing speaker Edward Sekandi, of whom they have been strong crititics. Besigye blocked at his home

The Forum for Democratic Change president Dr. Kiiza has again been blocked by security personnel as he headed towards Kasangati town from his home. Besigye was driving through a path from his home that joins the Gayaza main road when he met a heavy security presence. There were five police patrol cars, two police vans, four other security cars and a towing car. Commanded by the Officer in Charge of Kasangati Police Station Collins Mukitale, the security personnel then ordered Besigye to go back home. The officers at the scene told Besigye that he was under preventive arrest and that his only option was to go back home or face arrest. This comes at a time when the police continue …

9th Parliament Opens Today

The 9th Parliament officially starts business today with election of the Speaker and Deputy Speaker of Parliament top on the agenda. The 8th Parliament was dissolved at midnight as stipulated in the Constitution, hours after 374 new MPs were sworn in. Parliament’s spokesperson, Hellen Kaweesa told KFM that the ceremony, which will be presided over by the Chief Justice, Benjamin Odoki, will kick off at 10:00am. Meanwhile the new MPs have been challenged not to support the candidates along party lines. Dokolo Woman MP Cecilia Ogwal says candidates should not be elected basing on their party affiliation but focus should rather be on someone’s capability and potential to lead. New MPs sworn into office

The 3-day swearing-in ceremony for Members of Parliament has been concluded today, with 374 MPs sworn-in.  The Gomba county MP Rosemary Najemba however has not been sworn in since she is reportedly out of the country on official duty.  The 3-day ceremony was parked with fun and glamour and saw Members of Parliament make several pledges, hoping to make a difference. The house convenes tomorrow with a major task of electing the Speaker and Deputy Speaker. The ruling NRM has the majority in the 9th Parliament with 275 MPs, followed by FDC which has 30 members. UPC has 10 MPs, DP 9, while JEEMA and the Conservative Party have one member each.  The Independent MPs are 27 in the house. …

Encroachers evicted

The police and the military have evicted encroachers at the Lubiji wetland. Thousands flocked the wetland this week and put up structures reportedly for a makeshift market. The encroachers who claim to be NRM war veterans say they don’t have land and accuse the government of ignoring their plight. A joint operation of the police and military however saw the encroachers evicted this morning. The police fired teargas and bullets into the air to disperse the crowds and remains heavily deployed in the area. The police regional commander for the Kampala North Micheal Mugabe has however told the encroachers, that government will secure them alternative land.
