Prof. Barya out of MUK VC Race

News coming in from Makerere University indicates that Prof. Venancius Barya has been dropped from the race for the Vice Chancellor. Barya has been dropped alongside his archrival Prof. Katunguka Rwakyishaya. The University Senate sat this morning chaired by Prof. Sande Tickodri-Togboa, the acting Vice Chancellor in charge of finance and administration. This leaves 3 finalists in the race including Prof. Barnabas Nawangwe who got 52 votes, Prof. John Dumba Sentamu who got 42 votes and Prof. Edward Kirumira. Prof. Kirumira reportedly tied Prof. Barya in 3rd position, forcing a re-run, which saw the former win with a one-vote difference at 32. FDC’s Winne Kiiza bounces back to Parliament

FDC’s Winnie Kiiza has bounced back to parliament. This is after she emerged winner of yesterday’s by election for the Kasese district woman member of parliament. Kiiza beat her closest challenger NRM’s Rehma Muhindo with 97,669 against 59,946 votes. Democratic Party’s Rosemary Masika came in third place with 1,229 votes. Winnie Kiiza was declared winner at 2:20am by the Kasese district returning officer Valey Kanzira. Speaking shortly before the winner was announced, the Electoral Commission Chief Eng. Badru Kigundu urged all the candidates to accept the outcome of the polls saying it had been a relatively transparent and free and fair process. The by-election that attracted three contestants resulted from a court ruling that nullified Kiiza’s election over electoral irregularities. …

Voting kicks off in Kasese, delays reported

Voting continues at a slow pace at most polling centers in a by election for the Kasese district woman member of parliament. At some polling centers the exercise started late and the delays were due to late delivery of polling materials at some far off centers. While at other centers like Muhochya Primary School voting has been disrupted by a slight drizzle which forced the polling officials to shift the voting materials into the classrooms. At the Pentecostal Church poling center the delays were due to disagreements over the sitting arrangement of the polling agents and voters who had no voter’s cards, requiring lengthy processes of identification. One arrested over Naggalabi fire

The Police have arrested one person in connection with the fire that gutted Naggalabi cultural site in Buddo Wakiso district. The Police Commander Kampala metropolitan area Andrew Kawesi says the man identified as Kasigwa Kizito a resident of Nakawuka is being interrogated for any clues to the cause of the fire. The Buganda Kingdom spokesman, Charles Peter Mayigga says the site is very important in the Buganda culture as it is used for coronation ceremonies. The House that was razed is called Bwanika- where the actual coronation of the Kabaka is done. This comes at a time when the Bugnda kingdom has just marked 19 years since the coronation of Kabaka Ronald muwenda Mutebi II at the same site. This …

Fire guts Nagalabi cultural site

In News just in Fire has gutted Naggalabi cultural site. It is not yet clear how grave the fire is and how much loss has been incurred. When contacted Buganda spokesman, Charles Peter Mayigga did not commit himself on the matter but promised to speak to us later after confirming the incident. The site is very important in the Kiganda culture and used at coronation functions. This fire comes at a time when the Bugnda kingdom has just marked 19 years since the coronation of Kabaka Ronald Muwenda Mutebi at the same site.
