State of the Nation Address set for tomorrow

The State of the Nation address that was earlier scheduled for today will take place tomorrow at the Kampala Serena Hotel. The State of the Nation Address is held at the annual opening of a new session of Parliament, with the President’s speech focusing on the current political and socio-economic state of the nation. However, the opposition says it does not expect much from President Yoweri Museveni’s address. New Ministers take office today

New ministerial appointees are expected to be sworn in today. The 71 ministers were vetted and approved by the Appointments committee of Parliament last week. They will take their oaths at State House, Entebbe. Four out of the 75 ministers vetted are reportedly not on the confirmed list of ministers to be sworn in. Among them is Minister without Portfolio, Nasser Ssebagala; former State Minister in charge of Primary Health Care, James Kakooza; State Minister for Bunyoro Affairs, Saleh Kamba and State Minister for Investment, Mbabaali Muyanja. One dies at Namugongo

One person has died at Namugongo shrines, where thousands gathered for prayers in remembrance of the Uganda Martyrs today. The deceased has been identified as Mubarak Mwanje from Iganga district.   According to the Police Commander Kampala Metropolitan Region Grace Turyagumanawe, the deceased was sick and on medication. He is said to have died in the places of convenience. Turyagunawe however says the ceremony was largely peaceful, with very low crime rate registered. A total of 34 crimes was registered with the major cases involving attempts to issue counterfeit curreny notes. There was also one accident reported, in which a cyclist knocked one of the pilgrims before speeding off.  Turyagumanawe says 27 suspects remain in police custody awaiting different charges. …

Uganda celebrates Martyrs’ Day

Thousands of Christians have thronged the Namugongo Shrines in Kampala in remembrance of the Uganda Martyrs who were murdered over their faith. The 45 Catholics and Anglicans were killed on the orders King Mwanga II between 1885 and 1887. Christians have come in from different countries including Kenya, Tanzania, Democratic Republic of Congo and Malawi. The martyrs suffered cruel death including being beheaded, burnt, speared, castrated and sometimes ravaged by dogs. Prayers are being held at both the Catholic and Anglican Churches . At the Catholics shrine, the celebrations are led by Arua Diocesan Bishop Sabino Ochan Odiki, while Namirembe diocese will lead at the Anglican side. Shadow Cabinet Announced

The Opposition has finally announced its shadow cabinet, with new, young Members of Parliament featuring prominently. The new cabinet was today announced by the Leader of Opposition Nandala Mafabi at the FDC Headquarters. MP Abdu Katuntu is the Shadow Attorney General while Tororo county MP Geofrey Ekanya will shadow the Finance Minister. Beatrice Anywar now takes the Oil and Mineral Development portfolio while MP Ken Lukyamuzi replaces her as shadow Environment Minister. Masaka Municipality MP Mathias Mpuuga is the shadow minister for Presidency while Medard Ssegona shadows the Justice and Constitutional Affairs minister.
