Opposition chief whip loses Parliamentary seat

The Court of Appeal has nullified the election of the opposition chief whip Winfred Kizza as the Kasese Woman MP. Her election has been nullified over irregularities in the electoral process that saw valid votes wrongfully nullified. Winfred Kizza was dragged to court by her political rival Rehema Muhindo who said the process had not been free and fair. 3Justices of the Court of Appeal led by the Deputy Chief Justice Alice Mpagi Bahigeine found that 6,841 votes were invalidated wrongfully because the officials of the Electoral Commission did not know their role. Bodaboda cyclists protest

  Boda boda cyclists are protesting in different parts of the city against the ongoing police operations targeting the sector. They accuse the police of detaining their colleagues in unclear circumstances even when they have the riding permits and other requirements. The cyclists have been seen attacking police and UTODA officials during the protest. They began at Clock Tower, where they beat up all officials in sight, before heading to Wandegeya and Bwaise. At Wandegeya, one official was knocked down by the cyclists, who followed him and beat him up. State of the Nation expected today

President Yoweri Museveni is today expected to deliver the state of the nation address, highlighting key developments in the country over the last year. The address is expected to tackle the state of the economy, state of the infrastructure, social services sector and the general political environment, among others. The President will also be expected to give accountability on whether or not he has delivered on the pledges he made last year. On the economy, the inflation rate has hit a record high of close to 30% since the last address while interest rates have also soared. Shadow ministers condemn sacking

Members of parliament from the shadow cabinet have condemned the suspension of some of the shadow cabinet members by the leader of opposition in parliament. Yesterday Hon. Nandala Mafabi announced the suspension of DP and UPC shadow ministers over EALA representation. This was after Mafabi failed to rally support from the two parties to block the election process. The sacked shadow ministers include UPC’s Betty Amongi, Fr. Jacinta Ogwal, and Benson Obua. From the DP, Mathius Mpuuga, Medard Sseggona, Betty Nambooze, Lulume Bayiga and Ssebuliba Mutumba were affected by the decision. Nomination of candidates vying for the Bushenyi- Ishaka parliamentary seat kicks off today with a call on candidates to follow the set guidelines. The two day exercise has attracted 6 candidates including two party flag bearers and four independents Speaking to kfm the Bushenyi returning officer Mulimira Barbra says five of the 6 candidates have so far booked their nomination time. She identifies them as FDC’s Odota Tayebwa , NRM’s Basajjabalaba Nasser and Robert Bwarare an independent expected at 10am, 11 am and 2 PM respectively today.
