8 4GC leaders charged in Court

Eight members of the For God and my Country pressure group been charged in court. The group has been charged with 8 counts of managing an unlawful society. Led by former FDC leader Dr Kiiza Besigye, they have appeared before Buganda Road Court Chief Magistrate Olive Kazarwe who granted them a non cash bail of Sh.1m each. Some of the others are MP Mathias Mpuuga, FDC’s Ingrid Turinawe, Justice Forum president Asuman Basalirwa and Kyapa Karuhanga. Their sureties including MPs Gerald Karuhanga and Odo Tayebwa have been asked to sign court bonds worth Sh.2m each. Namungoona death toll now at 40

The death toll from the Namungoona fire continues to rise, now standing at 40. This is after two more victims of those admitted at Mulago Hospital succumbed to the burns sustained after a fuel tanker explosion last weekend. The deaths have been confirmed by Senior Pathologist Moses Byaruhanga. One of the deceased has been identified as 23 year old Christopher Ssenono, a commercial cyclist at Nsambya stage. More people continue to flock the city mortuary with hope of identifying the bodies of their loved ones. Byaruhanga however says handing over of bodies resumes on Monday after the DNA results are out. Several other victims of the fire remain in critical condition. Kazinda to challenge prison sentence

Geoffrey Kazinda has filed a notice of appeal against his five year jail sentence. The former chief accountant in the Office of the Prime Minister was last month convicted on charges of abuse of office, forgery and making documents without authority and unlawful possession of government property. The sentence was handed to him by Justice David Wangutsi of the Anti- Corruption Court. Kazinda through prison authorities has filed a notice of appeal informing Court of Appeal that he is dissatisfied with the decision of the court. Kazinda came to the fore last year after it was discovered that billions of shillings had been mismanaged in the Office of the Prime Minister. NSSF reaps from UMEME shares

The National Social Security Fund received sh19b as dividends from UMEME. The NSSF owns 131m shares which accounts for 28% of the total shares issued by the electricity distribution company. The NSSF managing director Richard Byarugaba says this is a 36% return over a period of 7 months since the current price on the stock exchange stands at sh345 up from sh275. He says the investment was worthwhile and ultimately beneficial to the members. UMEME’s Sam Zimbe reveals that they paid out dividends to 6000 individuals at Sh15 per share.

Namungoona fire:Families battle for cash

Another Namungoona fire victim has died this morning. Patrick Sserunkuuma succumbed to the burns he sustained when a fuel tanker exploded on Saturday night This brings to 39 the total number of the dead. His demise came amid fights between his family members on who is to receive the Shs 5 m from government. This morning, three family members who disagreed on who should take the money returned with evidence of clothes and shoes to prove they were close to the deceased. Mulago hospital authorities have however decided to carry out DNA tests on a one Jessica Nalule who claims to be the mother to the deceased.
