Parliamentary Committee on Trade looking for ways of reviving the national carrier.

The Parliamentary Committee on Trade has started getting views on the most rational way of reviving the national carrier. According to the committee chairman Kenneth Lubogo, they are considering the idea of acquiring aircrafts on lease other than buying brand new aircrafts. He said that they are still exploring the possibility of getting few aircrafts at the lowest cost and the government will gradually buy its own. In June last year, President Museveni directed the ministry of works and transport  to conclude discussions with investors to help Uganda start a national airline as a matter of urgency, saying Ugandan travelers were being exploited by foreign airlines.

Chief Justice Bart Katureebe has challenged magistrates to win public trust in the judiciary.

The Chief Justice Bart Katureebe has challenged magistrates to exhibit high levels of integrity in order to win public trust in the judiciary. Katureebe was speaking during a meeting with the general public at the court open day at Mengo Magistrates Court. The open day aims at providing a platform for members of the public to give feedback to the judiciary in order to have their concerns and grievances addressed. Justice Katureebe has decried the fact the judiciary continues to top the list of most corrupt institutions in the country. Most of the complaints from the public were about corrupt judicial officers, delayed court claims and land issues among others.

Nambooze suspended by DP NEC.

By Damali Mukhaye. The Democratic Party has suspended its Vice Chairperson for Buganda region and Mukono Municipality Member of Parliament Betty Nambooze. The motion to suspend Ms Namboze was moved by the DP youth vice chairman and seconded by a one Ritah Nakyanzi also a member of the youth League. The party Deputy spokesperson Waiswa Mufumbira, says Nambooze has been suspended for 3 months and a committee has been instituted to investigate her conduct and behaviors. The party’s top organ, the National Executive committee suspended Nambooze for defying the party president Nobert Mao. FDC wants government to further extend SimCard verification deadline.

Benjamin Jumbe The opposition Forum for Democratic Change wants government to further extend the SimCard verification deadline. This comes a day after government announced that phone users will now have upto May 19th instead of today the 20th April to validate their sim card registration using National IDs or risk having them deactivated. The FDC spokesperson Ssemujju Nganda says setting a one week deadline for the exercise in the first place was a big mistake. He now says before setting another deadline, government should instead work towards ensuring that all people meant to have national IDs get them.

The Ministry of Gender has been asked to launch a full investigation into reports of torture and sexual harassment being endured by Ugandan workers at the hands of some investors. The call comes at the time when the chairman AYA Investments Limited Muhammad Hamid is being investigated for allegedly sexually assaulting his female employee. Speaking to kfm, one of renowned women rights activist also former ethics Minister Miria Matembe says many acts of criminality are being inflicted on Ugandans by investors but nothing is being done to stop it.
