Masaka accident taxi driver on the run

Police has mounted a search for the driver of a taxi that caused an accident yesterday. The accident which involved a commuter taxi and a Toyota Premio occurred along the Kampala -Masaka highway, at Kalandazi near Buwama, town claimed nine lives. According to the traffic police Chief Dr Steven Kasiima, the accident was caused by recklessness of the taxi driver identified as Moses Ssentongo who was overtaking in a wrong area. Government to distribute milk freely to school going children

By Ssebuliba Samuel. Plans are underway by the government to distribute milk freely to school going children in an effort to improve their health and to also increase milk consumption in Uganda. The World Health Organisation recommends that every individual consumes an average of 600 liters of milk annually, but in Uganda consumption falls way below this recommendation, with estimates showing that Ugandans consume an average of 20 litres of milk every year. Speaking to Kfm, the state minister for Animal Husbandry Joy Kabatsi said that the government is still looking for less costly ways of distributing milk to all school going children in government aided schools who may be missing out on these nutrients.

Turkey set to sign MOU with Uganda in efforts to resettle refugees.

By Benjamin Jumbe The government of Turkey has expressed willingness to support Uganda in its efforts to resettle refugees. Turkey is currently the leading refugee host country in the world with a total of about 4 M refugees with majority coming from Syria. Now Turkish ambassador to Uganda Sedef Yavuzalp says Turkey is ready to offer technical assistance and capacity building for Ugandan officials. He urges government to ensure the MOU on setting up a coordination office for the Turkish Cooperation and Coordination Agency is cleared for signing to ensure more development and humanitarian assistance to Uganda.

372.6 M raised from the Uganda solidarity summit on refugees.

By Benjamin Jumbe A total of 372.6 Million dollars has been raised from the Uganda solidarity summit on refugees. This was announced by president Museveni at the end of the 2 day summit. President Museveni who was co-chairing the summit with the UN secretary general Antonio Guterres hailed the various countries and agencies for the generous contribution towards supporting Uganda’s efforts to takecare of the humanitarian and development needs of refugees and host communities. He said although a lot more is still needed, this will help address some of the most pressing issues like health education and infrastructure The summit was intending to raise 2 bn $ to support refugees for the next one year

US ambassador asks donors to exert pressure on south Sudan if refugee crisis is to reduce.

By Ssebuliba Samuel The unites states Ambassador to Uganda Deborah Malac has asked all donor communities to exerts pressure on worrying parties in south Sudan if refugee crisis is to reduce. Speaking during the ongoing solidarity summit on refugee at Munyonyo, Malac said that even though urgent attention is needed to cater for wondering refugees in Uganda, but long-lasting solution is needed to cube this crisis. She said that the use of gun has totally failed and thus diplomatic measures must be pursued by international communities to enable peace prevail between these two parties.
