Bobi Wine declared winner in the Kyadondo East By-Election

Acholi FDC MP’s to block sugar project.

By Ssebuliba Samuel MPs from Acholi sub region belonging to the opposition Forum for Democratic Change have threatened to block a sugar cane project by the Madhvani Group of Companies over land wrangles. In 2008 Madhvani applied for a 49 year-lease for 40,000 hectares of land to grow sugar cane at Lakang village, in Amuru district, but locals rejected this move. Last week the minister for lands Betty Amongi, flanked by a section of elders from this area agreed to have the projected expedited. According to MPs including Odonga Otto, Betty Aol and Gilbert Olanya, the project is good, but the process of acquiring the land raises suspicion. Speaker calls for more cancer awareness

By Ritah Kemigisa The speaker of parliament Rebecca Kadaga has called for more sensitization about the scourge of cancer and installation of screening facilities if the disease is to be contained in the country. While launching the rotary cancer run for 2017, Kadaga said the country does not have enough screening facilities for cancer yet the disease can only be realized in its last stages. She is now calling upon government to make cancer screening compulsory and automatic. The speaker meanwhile has pledged 449Million shillings from parliament where each Member of Parliament will contribute Shs 1 Million for this year’s cancer run which is soliciting for 1M dollars to construct a bunker for a radio therapy machine at Nsambya Hospital.

Professor Barnabas Nawangwe new MUK VC after a vote held by the University Council.

By Damali Mukhaye Professor Barnabas Nawangwe is the new Vice Chancellor of Makerere University after a vote held by the University Council. Today the University Council overwhelmingly voted him and his name has now been forwarded to the University Chancellor Prof. Ezra Suruma for endorsement. According to a member of the University Council, Prof Nawangwe garnered 16 votes followed by Prof Venansius Baryamureeba with four votes and Prof Edward Kasujja Kirumira with two. The chairperson of the university council Eng Charles Wana-etyem says that they are going to forward Prof Nawangwe’s name to the chancellor Prof Ezra Suruma for endorsement.
