MUK lecturers ask parliament to shelve AgeLimit Bill motion

By Ritah Kemigisa A group of 22 law lecturers from Makerere University have asked parliament to consider shelving the motion that seeks to remove presidential age limits. The group led by associate professor Christopher Mbaziira says the speaker backtracked on her position by allowing the proposal by Igara  West MP Raphael Magyezi yet she had earlier rejected a similar bill by Nakifuma MP Robert Kafeero Sekitoleko seeking to amend the retirement age of judicial officers. Yesterday Magyezi tabled the bill in parliament for the first reading and the Speaker Rebecca Kadaga referred it to the Committee on Legal and Parliamentary Affairs for further scrutiny. South Sudan president hails Museveni for the continued support

By Benjamin Jumbe: The President of South Sudan Salva Kiir has commended President Yoweri Museveni for the continued support and solidarity with his government. The appreciation was contained in a letter and special message conveyed by a delegation of the Sudan People’s Liberation Army led by the Chief of Defence Forces Gen James Ajong Mawut. During the meeting which took place at the State Lodge in Mbale Municipality yesterday, President Museveni and General Ajong discussed UPDF – SPLA security cooperation and training. Uganda and South Sudan have long standing economic and security interests. The country is also playing host to over one million refugees who fled instability in South Sudan.

Kanyamunyu 4th bail attempt to be heard today

By Ruth Anderah: The infamous Lugogo forest mall key murder suspect Matthew Kanyamunyu is today expected to be produced in Court for hearing of his fourth bail application. Kanyamunyu is expected to be produced before the Head of High Court Criminal division Wilson Kwesiga. Through his lawyers of Ochienge Associates, Kanyamunyu says it is his constitutional right to bail and the notion of presumption of innocence as major grounds to his new application. On August 23rd 2017, Justice Yasin Nyanzi dismissed Kanyamunyu’s 3rd bail application on grounds that he had made his application before the same judge who declined to release him on bail but with similar grounds. Age limit bill tabled for 1st reading

By Moses Kyeyune Igara West Member of Parliament Raphael Magyezi has this afternoon tabled his Bill on Constitution Amendment for the first reading. The Bill titled “The Constitution (Amendment) BILL. No 2 of 2017 has now been sent to the Committee on Legal and Parliamentary Affairs chaired by West Budama North MP Markson Oboth Oboth for scrutiny. The Bill seeks to amend Article 102 (b) of the Constitution to lift the presidential age cap of 75. Opponents of the Bill argue that the move is dangerous as it will pave the way for life presidency which is contrary to basic democratic principles. MPs demand an apology from Speaker Kadaga

This follows the suspension of 24 opposition legislators amid chaos that ensued before Igara West Member of Parliament Raphael Magyezi was granted leave to table a motion for a private member’s bill on age limit.
