US ambassador asks donors to exert pressure on south Sudan if refugee crisis is to reduce.

By Ssebuliba Samuel The unites states Ambassador to Uganda Deborah Malac has asked all donor communities to exerts pressure on worrying parties in south Sudan if refugee crisis is to reduce. Speaking during the ongoing solidarity summit on refugee at Munyonyo, Malac said that even though urgent attention is needed to cater for wondering refugees in Uganda, but long-lasting solution is needed to cube this crisis. She said that the use of gun has totally failed and thus diplomatic measures must be pursued by international communities to enable peace prevail between these two parties.

Finance minister to answer allegations of supposed arrogance towards parliamentary committees

By Moses Kyeyune Parliament has committed the minister of Finance Matia Kasaija to the committee on Rules, Discipline and privileges over contempt. The directive by the Speaker Rebecca Kadaga follows several complaints from members about the minister’s supposed arrogance towards parliamentary committees and the institution of parliament as a whole. Last evening, the Chairperson of Parliament’s Public Accounts Committee Angeline Osegge brought the matter to the attention of the Speaker. She faulted the Minister and the Permanent Secretary Keith Muhakanizi for disregarding summons to the committee. Internal Affairs Minister cautions public against paying for express passports

Internal Affairs Minister Gen Jeje Odongo has cautioned the public against paying for express passports, fearing that many could be conned of their hard earned money. Gen Odongo made the call on the floor of Parliament last evening where he was explaining the shortage of ordinary passport booklets in the country. He says that whereas issuance of ordinary passports is currently restricted, a number of other travel documents such as the East African Passport, COMESA, the National Identity Cards and temporary travel documents were being issued. An ordinary passport is issued upon payment of Shs 150,000 while the express one costs Shs 300,000. The shortage does not affect diplomatic passports.

Oil bonanza money final report to be debated today

By Moses Kyeyune Parliament’s Committee on Commissions, Statutory Authority and State Enterprises is today expected to present to Parliament, its final report on the oil bonanza money. The report was carried forward from yesterday to allow Members of Parliement enough time for debate. In its report, the committee has recommended that all the 42 government officials refund the Sh6bn they shared as a reward by the president for winning the landmark arbitration tax dispute in Landon between Uganda, Heritage Oil & Gas and Tullow Oil. The 95 page report by the Committee chaired by Bugweri County MP Abdul Katuntu also notes that the payment of a bonus to the officials who participated in the arbitration case was erroneously done. UN Chief visits Imvempi refugee settlement camp

The Secretary General is in the country to Co-host the Uganda Solidarity Summit on refugees with President Yoweri Museveni which opens in Kampala today with a number of side events organized by various humanitarian agencies. The 2-day summit is meant to raise the profile of refugees in Uganda and mobilize financial support to meet their needs and those of the host communities.
