Uganda parliament to host Commonwealth Youth Parliament Summit

By Benjamin Jumbe. Parliament of Uganda is set to host a landmark Fourth Commonwealth Youth Parliament Summit next week. The conference running from 14 to 19 March, 2018 is expected to attract to attract over 200 delegates from all the common wealth countries. The Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Jacob Oulanyah, meeting a delegation from the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (Africa Region) said that the Conference will expose the youth to the realities of legislation and governance at regional level. Museveni faults Rukungiri residents for voting opposition

He was addressing a rally in Nyakagyeme Sub-County ,Rujumbura County, in Rukungiri District last evening. The president said those voted are inexperienced in leadership and only survive on lies and propaganda, leaving the NRM leaders who have a time tested track record in finding solutions to the country’s challenges. Makerere scraps evening lectures

Makerere University has scrapped evening lectures with only day and afternoon lessons to be allowed This has been revealed by the University vice chancellor Prof Bernabas Nawangwe during a press conference at the university this morning He says this new development is to take effect in the new academic year which begins in August 2018 Prof Nawangwe however says continuing students who are on the evening program will not be affected by this move noting that they will continue with their studies until they finish.

EC declares FDC’s Paul Mwiru winner of the Jinja East by-election

By Benjamin Jumbe. The Electoral Commission has declared FDC’s Paul Mwiru the winner of the Jinja East Constituency by-election beating NRM’s Nathan Igeme Nabeta and 6 others. Mwiru garnered 6,654 votes against Nabeta’s 5043 votes, followed by Faizal Mayemba Masaba an independent candidate who got 117 votes. Speaking to journalists shortly after, Mwiru applauded the voters for their overwhelming support pledging to continue serving them and representing them without fear or favor. He also asked the electoral commission and security agencies to investigate the origin of the pre-ticked ballot papers which were confiscated during the voting process yesterday.

Museveni petitions EU to end ivory trade

President Yoweri Museveni has called on the European Union Environment Commissioner, Mr. Karmenu Vella, to close Europe’s domestic trade in ivory, end all ivory exports and support efforts to ban the global ivory trade. The President noted that Uganda is one of the few countries that still host African elephants. In a message of support to a petition in support of international calls to the European Union to end ivory trade, President Museveni told the European Environment Commissioner that as Europe has led the fight against illegal poaching, those European efforts are being undermined by the continued legal trade in ivory in the European Union countries.
