US Ambassador condemns raid on NGOs

By Samuel Ssebuliba: The United States Ambassador to Uganda has expressed deep concern over the raids on Civil Society Organisations Offices in Kampala Police yesterday surrounded the headquarters of Action Aid Uganda, in Kansanga and Great Lakes Initiative for Strategic Studies where they conducted a cordon and search operation. In a statement issued this afternoon, Amb. Deborah Malac says that recent arrests and raids stifle the Ugandan people’s right to free expression and tarnish Uganda’s global image. She adds that infringements on protected rights under Uganda’s Constitution will impede the country’s development. She has thus called on the Government of Uganda to guarantee all its citizens freedom of speech, expression and assembly, without fear of intimidation.

Leader of Opposition condemns deployment at parliament

By Moses Kyeyune: The Leader of Opposition in Parliament, Winnie Kiiza has condemned what she calls unprofessional conduct against members of Parliament. This is after police attempted to block some of the members opposed to the amendment of the constitution from accessing the premises of Parliament. Earlier today, the police attempted to arrest Lwemiyaga County MP Theodore Ssekikubo but failed after fellow lawmakers formed a ring around him to block the police. The MPs accuse the police of turning parliament into a battle field. However, the Kampala Metropolitan Police Commander Frank Mwesigwa has rubbished the allegations saying they are only doing the job. Lukwago arrested and taken Kira police station

City Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago has been arrested and taken to Kira Police Station. He was this morning picked up from his home at Wakaliga in Rubaga Division as he attempted to leave and join a procession to the Constitution Square for the launch of the KCCA elected leaders’ anti-age limit campaign. The campaign code-named “Togibikula” is a meant to express their strong opposition to the ongoing debate on the lifting of the current 75 age limit for presidential candidates. Others that had been expected to take part in the procession were the city councilors but they have all been blocked by the police from their respective homes. UN Chief faults global media for not reporting on refugee crisis in Uganda

By Judith Atim The UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres has faulted the global media for not paying attention to the refugee crisis in Uganda. Guterres made the remarks yesterday at the General Assembly side event on refugees and migrants as a follow up to the 2016 New York Declaration on Refugees and migrants which endorsed the need for greater international cooperation on the issue.
