MOH sets up task force to respond to Ebola outbreak in neighboring DRC

By Shamim Nateebwa. Government has set up a national task force to respond to the Ebola outbreak reported in neighboring Democratic Republic of Congo. Health officials have confirmed two cases of the virus and 17 deaths in the town of Bikoro. According to state health minister Sarah Opendi, thetask force comprising various specialists sits this afternoon to come up with precautionary measures to stop the deadly disease from spreading into Uganda. She adds though, that Uganda has over the years built adequate expertise in dealing with such infectious out breaks. In 2000, an outbreak of Ebola in Gulu killed 224 people and infected 425. Lands Minister Amongi – Uganda has no Land Fund

By Ivan Ssenabulya. Lands minister Betty Amongi has revealed that Uganda has no Land Fund. She has made the revelation while appearing before the commission of inquiry into land matters for the second day. Amongi is appearing before the commission chaired by Justice Catherine Bamugemereire and is being interrogated over allegations of abusing money from the Land Fund and illegally acquiring property in the upscale Kololo suburb. The Land Act calls for the establishment of the fund, however Amongi has told the commission of inquiry into land matters that it was established but not operationalized. MOH to use Oral Cholera Vaccine to prevent future outbreaks

By Shamim Nateebwa. The Ministry of Health is set to embark on use of the Oral Cholera Vaccine to prevent future outbreaks of the disease in Uganda. This comes days after the outbreak of cholera was confirmed in Kampala and other remote parts of the country with atleast 7 cases being handled at Naguru hospital. The state minister for health Sarah Opendi says vaccination against cholera will be rolled out in two month as another approach to prevent the epidemic. She however notes that cholera vaccination will not replace the other interventions, but will serve as a complementary measure to fight the disease. 104-year-old to end his life, “My life stopped being enjoyable 5 or 10 years ago,”

A 104-year-old Australian scientist who is set to end his life at a clinic in Switzerland later this week told CNN that his life was no longer worth living and said he hoped his story would lead to the legalization of assisted dying in other countries. Student remanded for faking her own kidnap

By Ruth Anderah. A 19 year old girl has been remanded to Luzira prison for allegedly faking her kidnap and receiving 750,000 shillings from her mother as a disguised ransom. Peace Ansiimirwe is a student and a resident of Bushenyi district.She has been jointly charged alongside her unemployed boy- friend, 22 year old Julius Atwebembeire a resident of Kasubi in Lubaga division within Kampala city.
